Annotated Bibliography October 8, 2009

1. Batchelor, Bob and Scott Stoddart. ” Performing Arts” The 1980′s- American Popular Culture Through History.  pg. 135.

This source will give me information about what was happening in the performing arts in the 1980′s.  It will help with the historical context.

2. Blau, Francine D. and Lawrence M. Kahn. ” Swimming Upstream: Trends in the Gender Wage Differential in the 1980′s.” Journal of Labor Economics 15.1 (1997): 1-42.

I thought that this would help with my social stratification section.  This article talks about gender differences in the workforce during the ’80′s.  It talks about the gender pay gap.

3.  Colt, George. ” Michael Bennett Once Again Looks Backstage for a Hit.” New York Times  20 Dec. 1981.

This article discusses what Michael Bennett, the director, thinks of Dreamgirls.  He refers to it as a “backstage musical.”  Mr. Bennet tells readers what the show is really about-family.  This article also talks about how the production of Dreamgirls began.  Mr. Bennet talks a lot about his opinion of the show.  This source will help me give information from the director’s point of view.

4. Kennedy, Michael Patrick and John Muir. “Musicals.” Musicals.  Harper Collins Publishers, 1997.

This source will help me give general information about Dreamgirls, such as date of first performance, characters, original cast and music and songs.

5. Lad. Kashmira. ” 1980′s Timeline: Important Events of the 1980′s.” Buzz.com  2 June 2008. 7 Oct. 2009.

This source will help me with historical context because it provides information about major historical events by year during the ’80′s.

6.  Saltzman, Cynthia. “Musical ‘Dreamgirls’ Can Be a Nightmare For Backstage Crew.”  The Wall Street Journal 8 June 1982.

This source talks about the technicalities of the show.  It talks about all of the work that went into making the show, such as the budget, all of the costumes, the set pieces, and the special effects.  This source will help me provide legistics about the show meaning the “behind the scenes” work.

7.   Woll, Allen. Black Musical Theater From Coontown to Dreamgirls. Baton Rouge and London: Louisianna State University Press, 1989.

This source will give me information about Black musical theater in general during the time of the show.

8.  Attached is a Dreamgirls commercial from 1981, the time when the show priemered on Broadway.
